Abstract
This study investigated the isolation and identification of indigenous fungal species from petroleum-contaminated soils in Bonny Island, Rivers State, Nigeria. The research aimed to identify fungi with potential for biodegrading petroleum hydrocarbons, which could be useful for environmental cleanup of contaminated sites. Soil samples were collected from oil-impacted areas and analyzed for both physicochemical properties and fungal diversity using standard microbiological techniques. Five fungal species were successfully isolated and identified, with Aspergillus species showing the highest prevalence, suggesting their strong adaptation to hydrocarbon-polluted environments. The findings contribute to understanding indigenous microbial communities in petroleum-contaminated environments and their potential for bioremediation applications.
